Since 2023, our founding duo has built North Star Roosts as a lean, agile operation where we own and operate multiple ventures alongside our three core divisions. We combine hands-on precision with practical vision to design spaces that empower people to thrive at every life stage. From Wren Homes' architecture to Cardinal Interiors' curated furnishings and Faulkner Farms & Estates' land planning, we deliver cohesive solutions without the complexity of juggling separate firms. Our mobile lifestyle keeps us adaptable, responsive, and deeply attuned to how spaces function in the real world.

Meet the Founders
Sunny
Sunny grew up in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, excelling in academics, music, and various athletic pursuits before eventually attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science.
Six years in the medical and dental fields followed, marked by extremely careful work around compliance and dense regulations while navigating numerous insurance companies on behalf of patients. The work required precision and steady communication. During three of the six years, a small business received support managing insurance caseloads and creating backend operations and procedures still in use today, establishing repeatable systems to help the business grow.
Founding work with Faulkner Farms and Estates included early administration and an integral role in expanding the farms and estates side of the business, shaping the operational foundation for future growth.
In 2025, a career shift brought completion of an apprenticeship with a poultry and regenerative farm based in San Diego County. Daily responsibilities included care for layers, meat birds, turkeys, llamas, and guard geese, providing hands-on education in animal husbandry and regenerative land practices.
During the appenticeship, Sunny was also tasked in grading and sorting eggs to USDA standards for packaging and sale, and was able to touch all parts of the small commercial poulrty farm’s processing of their meat birds and preparation for retail sale.
In 2026, completion of an accelerated Revit and BIM program led to drafting under the Wren Homes and Cardinal Interiors divisions of North Star Roosts. Additionally, Sunny designs business plans, SOP’s, and management structures for Faulkner Farms and Estates’ clients.
Jay
Jay grew up in the Shenandoah Valley on an advanced academic path, attending Virginia’s Governor's School summer programs for robotics, early BIM technologies, Greek, and Latin. Moving to North Carolina allowed Middle College program participation alongside part-time employment held since age fifteen.
The Great Recession necessitated leaving formal education early for financial independence. Diner food service led to nationwide security and event production roles, providing an intimate look at corporate gathering operations. Event production led to meeting a combination nonprofit farm and event venue where Jay lived and worked on-site for two years. There many skills were tempered: regenerative farming, animal husbandry, logging, irrigation, as well as foresty and land mangament.
A logistics career progressed from box truck driver to moving company operations manager. Concurrent bridge inspection work as a Nondestructive Field Technician involved nationwide long-haul travel. Using cutting-edge acoustic devices, Jay and two others spent two months inspecting the Oakland-Bay and San Mateo-Hayward bridges in California.
Returning to school yielded an Interior Design associate degree and hotel procurement internship. Subsequent work at a Southern Living Magazine Premier Home Designer firm focused on age-in-place and multigenerational living, emphasizing traditional and modern southern design and cutting-edge building practices such as ICF and fully truss-framed homes as well as traditional stick-frame.
Relocating to Minnesota preceded a Lead Designer role for a Boston firm, managing over 200 historic and new-build projects remotely across two years. The Boston employer and mentor helped Sunny and Jay launch North Star Roosts LLC as the first client. Since founding the firm, Jay has obtained a second associate degree in Architectural Technology.

Faulkner Farms & Estates applies universal design to land planning, creating accessible pathways, ergonomic farm layouts, and inclusive estate designs that prioritize function alongside beauty.
