October Is the Last Month of Forgiveness in California
October forgives. January invoices.
In California, October is the last month the dirt cooperates. After that, El Nino writes the schedule, and El Nino does not take meetings. The federal drought update for California and Nevada puts a greater than 90 percent chance on a very strong El Nino persisting from September into January. Coastal California's seasonal outlook favors above-normal precipitation through the end of the year. And property managers on the ground describe the setup plainly: from roughly May to October, dust, oak leaf drop, and fine grit blow into every horizontal opening on a property and just sit there, waiting for the first storm to turn them into plugs.
So here is the Faulkner Farms & Estates October assignment, in plain English. Walk the water while you can still see it. Clear culverts, ditch lines, and drain inlets before the leaf drop finishes, because a culvert plugged with oak leaves is a flooded lane by January. Regrade berms and swales now, while the ground is soft enough to move and dry enough to hold a shape. Check every crossing and low spot with a wet week in mind, not a dry week in mind. And photograph your erosion scars this month, so after the storms you know exactly what the weather did versus what was already asking for trouble.
This is what a biome and topographic assessment pays for, twice. First it tells you where the water wants to go, so you can design catchment instead of chaos. Then it gives you a baseline, so a super El Nino becomes a savings account full of stored water instead of an erosion invoice.
October forgives. January invoices. Do the October work.
